How to tune your Bass guitar

Our free online Bass guitar tuner is a great tool to help you learn how to tune a Bass guitar. Tuning your Bass guitar is one of the most important things a beginning Bass guitar player needs to learn. It is the first step to successful Bass guitar playing. If your Bass guitar is properly tuned you will always sound better. Your online Bass guitar lessons will sound great with a tuned Bass guitar. Before you practice your Bass guitar, always tune your instrument.

Tuning your Bass guitar is a process that takes time to learn, but gets easier with practice. Eventually you will develop an "ear" for the right tone. You will soon become familiar with the tone of what "sharp" and "flat" sound like, in addition to what "in tune" sounds like. Soon you will know how to tune a Bass guitar by ear.

Using our online Bass guitar tuner you can easily tune your Bass guitar. Your Bass guitar strings should be tuned to the following notes (lowest to highest in pitch) E, A, D, G. This is called standard tuning. Sometimes the strings are numbered, from bass to treble. Usually the strings are numbered 4, 3, 2, and 1 (lowest in tone to highest in tone). There are several other possible tunings, but for the beginner, standard tuning is the best way to tune your Bass guitar.

To use the free online Bass guitar tuner, turn up your computer speakers and click E on the left of the tuner (low E). Pluck your 4th (low / thickest) string on your guitar. Adjust the string pitch by turning the corresponding tuning peg until it sounds the same as the Bass guitar tuner.

Remember to tune upwards. Start at a lower tone than the note you are tuning to. The 4th string is the thickest string, and has the lowest pitch. Try to hear if the 4th string on your Bass guitar sounds higher or lower than the note on our Bass Tuner. If it sounds higher in pitch to you, de-tune that string to a lower tone than the Bass Tuner, and then re-tune up to the correct pitch by matching the tone you hear from the Bass Tuner. If the pitch of your Bass is already lower than the Bass Tuner tone, just tune up to the correct pitch. After a few practice runs this technique will become second nature.

Next, click the A note. Adjust the tuning peg for the 3rd string until it sounds the same as the A note on the tuner, remembering to tune up to the correct note. Repeat this procedure with the rest of the strings. That's how easy it is to use the online Bass guitar tuner.

Special Note: Some people can actually hear/feel the sound wave vibration that the "in tune" string makes. They know the individual string is in tune when they can't hear/feel the vibration (or oscillation, for the scientific minded) anymore. The wave sine is said to be flat. Some people use combinations of both techniques!
After tuning your Bass guitar we suggest that you play around with the tuning on one string. Play with one note by raising the pitch slightly and listening to what "sharp" sounds like. Then lower the pitch back to "in tune" to hear what the "natural" note sounds like. Now lower the pitch and listen to what "flat" sounds like. Again, using our online Bass guitar tuner, re-tune back to "in tune". Practice this technique on each string. This will help you learn to tune your Bass guitar by ear.
